For more than two decades, Ninetoes has been rocking dance floors worldwide with what began as Hip Hop, and over the years developed into his unique brand of rhythmical, jacking and groove driven house and techno. He now reaches another milestone in his career with the launch of his own label Head To Toe. To celebrate, we invited him along for a podcast & a chat.
Thanks for taking the time to record a mix for our podcast series, was there any special concept behind your mix, or tracks played form your own releases?
The mix contains a lot of tracks I’m playing right now in my sets and also my first release ‘Miracle’ on my own imprint Head To Toe. I added ‘Madizm’ the third release on Head To Toe as a world premiere into the mix. Madizm will come out in June.
Where did you record the mix, and what equipment did you use?
I recorded it in my apartment in Berlin and used Ableton live to record it.
What is your thought process when picking out tracks for a podcast, do you pre-select the tracks, or just pick out the first couple and freestyle it from there?
Sometimes yes and sometimes no. It depends on my mood 🙂 but here I just picked tracks with a very warm but groovy mood.
How do you compare playing in a club to recording a podcast, is there much of a change in your mixing style and track selections?
Of course. I think playing a club set depends on the club, the crowd and vibe in the club. When you could read all these components you will find your style of music you will play. And on a podcast.. it’s way easier to experiment with new tracks and create a mix you would probably not create during a club set.
What stores or other places do you normally look for new music… is it all sourced online, or do you also pick up the odd bit of vinyl?
I would say 50% of the music I play is my own music I produce. 40% vinyl only tracks.
5% promo tracks I get from promo pools and 5% digital platforms which I buy.
Could you tell us a bit about your most memorable DJ experience?
There are too many crazy and amazing moments to select only one. I could write a book with all these memories 🙂
What other projects do you have lined up, do you have any new releases or forthcoming gigs we should be watching out for?
like I told you before, I started my own imprint called Head To Toe. My first single ‘Miracle’ just came out last Friday. During the next 2 months I will release singles number two and three. In October I will release my very first album also on my own imprint Head To Toe. Just watch out for these ones 😉
