New on Monkey Safari’s label Hommage is a label debut from UK based Kieran Apter, who prior to this has released on Chapter 24 Records, Anjunadeep and Anima Somnis.
Each of the works are collaborations, the title track “Cleo” made with vocalist Leon Power, and the other “Heads Or Tails” is produced with Sandeman who’s previously featured on labels including Rebellion, Get Physical and Exotic Refreshment.
The EP features solo reworks too from Avidus and Karl Friedrich who each bring their own flavour to the title track having released on Hommage previously.
Cleo is a deep and intricate cut with gentle percussion, and a poignant vocal that floats over the track like a loved one whose memory is not forgotten, despite their physical presence no longer being felt. With a fine blend of euphoria and emotions mixed with a club friendly groove, it’s the perfect opening track.
Heads Or Tails keeps the deep and murky mood alive focusing on the movement of spiralling LFO’s and airy pads to create a dark atmosphere that’s augmented with claps and conga hits. Very much the kind of track that takes you on a journey, it’s got simplicity at its core.
Both remixes of Cleo keep the original’s vocal with Avidus adding some acid tinges to the bassline, and Karl Friedrich working in some haunting melodies that compliment the spine tingling vocal. There is also a dub of the Avidus mix for those who want to focus on the acid elements of his rework.
