Releasing music under numerous guises in an already impressive career, his first big success as Simion came from remixing Ben Pearce’s ‘What I Might Do`, which put Simion’s name on the map and marked the start of a string of high charting releases, including prestigious labels eg SNATCH! Records, Suara, Defected, Mother Recordings, Simma Black, OFF Recordings and his own imprint Hedonism Music.
To celebrate his latest release on Mother Recordings, the “Air Jordan” EP, we invited him along for an exclusive podcast and mini interview..
Thanks for taking the time to record a mix for our podcast series, was there any special concept behind your mix, or tracks played from you own releases?
It was a pleasure doing this for you. Actually I was using tracks I play out on my gigs. Of course I included some of my latest stuff and my unreleased track „Air Jordan“ which will be released on Mother in August.
Where did you record the mix, and what equipment did you use?
I did the mix in my studio and I used Ableton Live.
What is your thought process when picking out tracks for a podcast, do you pre-select the tracks, or just pick out the first couple and freestyle it from there?
Usually I freestyle as I do it in the club. I always have a bunch of tracks I´d like to play and take it from there.
How do you compare playing in a club to recording a podcast, is there much of a change in your mixing style and track selections?
It’s a big difference as you don´t have a crowd reacting to your music. You just check out if the next track fits to the previous one and the flow is right for my taste. In my sets I need to react to the crowd as well.
What stores or other places do you normally look for new music… is it all sourced online, or do you also pick up the odd bit of vinyl?
I buy tracks on Beatport and Traxsource. Sometimes Vinyl.
Could you tell us a bit about your most memorable DJ experience?
What happens on tour stays on tour.
What other projects do you have lined up, do you have any new releases or forthcoming gigs we should be watching out for?
There is a new EP called „Air Jordan“ lined up for August on Mother Recordings. I play the tracks for months and the reactions are always outstanding.
