USUK is a duo consisting of Chad Stegall and Mark EG. Chad is an American synth and keyboard composer whose captivating melodies and chord progressions have been layered over Mark’s pounding percussion. The release focuses mainly on techno but also touches on electro and has a strong synthwave influence.
Mark EG is a techno DJ and producer from the UK who is known for playing fast and energetic DJ sets, he has also released music on labels such as D.A.V.E. The Drummer’s Hydraulix.
The album’s first track “Ready to Move” sets the scene with ambient pads and a thought-provoking vocal sample that eases the listener into the action. After the kick drum and other percussive sounds take hold, the track synths continue to develop and create epic soundscapes.
“Murder State (An Ode to John Carpenter)” is the second track and it’s a tense piece of music with dystopian undertones. Its dramatic chords have something gothic about them and the police radio samples add to the suspense.
All of the tracks have their own personality and the album unfolds with building tension, but “Time and Tension” is one cut that does stand out. It’s got fast-flowing percussion and sweeping pads fused with a powerful arpeggio line.
All of the tracks have got an epic sound and the album deserves to be listened to from start to finish in order to fully explore this treasure trove of music.
