Clif Jack is a rising star of the world techno scene, and the Italian artist’s new release is a two-track EP called, Silenzio Follia.
The release is out now via Clif Jack’s own record label MJA the Vision, but he also boasts recent releases on other imprints such as Simina Grigoriu’s Kuukou. Fans of Clif Jack will also be familiar with his music on other imprints such as Reinier Zonneveld’s Filth on Acid, Juliet Fox’s TREGAMBE and Deborah De Luca’s Solamente.
This release is another example of Clif Jack’s innovative approach to making techno, and how he looks for inspiration in different places. In a statement about this release, Clif Jack explains that the title track, “Silenzio Follia” came to be after a moment of inspiration during a studio session when I was lost inside my own thoughts. I had the idea to create a track that would represent a stark contrast between absolute silence and an explosion of madness.”
“Silenzio Follia” has a strong vocal that defines the track, and Clif Jack continued to explain that in the studio he “had an unexpected conversation with a friend where I told him my idea. After my friend and I talked, I realised I had accidentally recorded the conversation with him, and the discussion had generated some audio that I thought was perfect to sample. The word “Follia” meaning “Madness” in English became a commanding vocal that I used as the focal point of the track. There are other words such as Silenzio (Silence), Calma (Calm), Suono (Sound), Rumore (Noise) and Spazio (Space) that I also cut from the conversation, plus some phrases that in the context of the track, sounded really poignant.”
First on the release is the hard-hitting groove and driving energy of “Silenzio Follia,” but the second track “The Raider” takes a more melodic approach. “The Raider” has an uplifting synth line layered over pounding drums and throbbing synths that create peak time energy. It also has a dark atmosphere that creates captivating contrast with the euphoria of the melody.
