HiMom!!! drops a trance-fuelled techno EP called Lucid Dream that has four raw and analogue tracks with a retro sound.

The release comes via HiMom!!!’s record label Dancing By Myself, and it’s only the artist’s second-ever release using this alias. There isn’t much online about the artist, and it appears to be a secret alias, but this might change as they release more music.

In terms of the style, this release might not be for everyone, as it does have a distinctive sound that people will either love or hate depending on how they feel about old-school trance from the ‘90s.

Trance has had a big resurgence of late, and big euphoric synth riffs or classic records have started to become a regular feature of underground techno DJ sets. Younger generations who missed out on the first wave of trance are hearing the genre for the first time, and older artists seem to be digging out forgotten classics.

This release definitely taps into that movement, the first track “Come Alive” being a fusion of modern techno, and the euphoria of trance. It features the same style of vocals often sampled in tracks by people like Fred again…, and it’s a driving cut that has a fresh sound.

“Starlight” and “Breath” are the next two tracks, and they both tap into the same idea. Both are trance tracks made with analogue synths and raw drums, which have been deliberately left unpolished. This gritty style stops those tracks from sounding mainstream, and is a nice way to make classic-sounding tracks that fit with modern production standards. Many of the older tracks in that style sound thin and flimsy compared to modern electronic music.

“Bring It On” is a nice ending to the release, as it continues the retro sound with an old-school breakbeat that sounds like it’s from the Warehouse Rave era. Rhythmic vocal snippets lead the track to a euphoric breakdown where the track takes an uplifting turn.
